Silverpoint on Gesso and Wood
Portrait from a model. Three hour pose.

This is one of my favorite styles of portraiture. It is a technique used by the old masters that has a lovely effect. A piece of silver wire is used to draw the figure onto the board and this is accomplished by scratching into the wood with the wire. Over time, as the piece is exposed to oxygen, the residue from the metal will tarnish giving it its yellowed hues. I really appreciate that this technique has been in practice since medieval times, having reached its peak during the Renaissance period.

Music I listened to while creating this piece: Louis Prima
